Job Summary
Uni-Systems Engineering is seeking a Structural Engineering Intern who is excited to apply what they are learning in the classroom to unique, real-world engineering challenges.
As a summer intern, you will work alongside experienced structural engineers as a contributing member of active project teams. Our interns are included in the same project meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions as our engineers, giving you exposure to the full engineering process and the opportunity to see how decisions are made throughout a project. You will gain hands-on experience with structural analysis, finite element modeling, steel design, CAD modeling, and engineering calculations while seeing how custom structures move from design through fabrication and installation.
This is an opportunity to strengthen your technical skills, learn from experienced engineers, and make meaningful contributions to one-of-a-kind projects.
Internship Experience
- Full-time summer internship, 40 hours per week.
- Internships generally run from late May through late August, with flexibility in start and end dates based on school schedules.
- Each intern is paired with an experienced mentor who provides guidance and support throughout the summer.
- Interns participate in periodic lunches, activities, and other opportunities to connect with fellow interns and employees across the company.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform structural design calculations and prepare supporting documentation using Mathcad, Excel, and hand calculations.
- Create and review CAD models, design sketches, and engineering drawings throughout the design process.
- Perform solid-element finite element analysis (FEA) of connections and weldments using SolidWorks Simulation.
- Perform frame analysis using SAP2000 and assist with post-processing and evaluating analysis results.
- Apply structural engineering principles to steel components, connections, assemblies, and custom project-specific designs.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions alongside engineers and other project team members.
- Collaborate with structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers to solve multidisciplinary design challenges.
- Participate in special projects within the Structural Engineering department.
- Contribute ideas for improving design quality, performance, manufacturability, assembly, cost, and maintainability.
- Support additional engineering activities based on project needs and your developing skills and interests.
Qualifications
- Must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR due to access to export-controlled technical data.
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil, Structural, or a related engineering discipline with an emphasis in structural engineering. Bachelor’s candidates should generally be entering their junior or senior year.
- Exposure to frame analysis and/or finite element analysis (FEA) software.
- Self-motivated and curious, with a desire to learn, ask questions, and contribute to real engineering work.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply engineering fundamentals to new and unfamiliar challenges.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet project deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
If you are looking for an internship where you can apply your engineering education, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to structures that are anything but ordinary, we encourage you to apply. We look forward to the possibility of you joining our dynamic team this summer!
